Join us in preserving the Mount Elgon ecosystem and the livelihoods of those who live within this region. Your contribution will directly impact our conservation efforts as our organization begins to grow.

Our Impact

Enacting Change across the Ecosystem

Mount Elgon is inhabited by ethnically diverse populations of indigenous, agricultural, and entrepreneurial communities whose livelihoods create resource competition.

This multi-layered dynamic has resulted in constant tension in the ecosystem between the key stakeholders, agriculturalists, indigenous communities, and protected area management agencies. As a scientific and community center, we want to combine conservation science, knowledge creation and stakeholder engagement through the following projects:

  • Climate-Resilient Agriculture
  • Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation
  • Ethnobotany and Bioprospecting
Our Programs

Climate-Resilient Agriculture

Over 75% of the working population in Mount Elgon relies on farming as their primary source of income, yet detrimental farming practices have increased due to low production. These practices can have substantial negative effects on the environment, leading to soil degradation, eutrophication of water sources, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

To introduce sustainable agriculture, we’re comparing traditional methods for increasing agricultural production versus sustainable and climate-resilient methods.
